Ch 10 Blog

Human Population Growth

The Earth's population has increased dramatically over the past century. In 1804, there were an estimated one billion people on the planet. By 1927, that number had doubled, and it doubled again in 1974. At that rate of growth, the Census Bureau estimates, the world population could reach 9.4 billion by the year 2050.
China is the world's most populous nation with about 1.32 billion men, women and children - about 20% of world population. The second largest is India, with 1.12 billion - about 17 percent of all people on Earth. India is followed by the United States, with 300 million and Indonesia, with 225 million people. Together, these four nations contain nearly half of the world's human population.
There's an obvious link between the number of people and the amount of pressure we are putting on the environment. More people require more resources to survive. That means more potential for polluting the planet's air, soil and water.
That's where we all come in. Saving the environment will require everyone's best efforts - not just those of politicians, scientists, grownups or kids acting alone.- by David George Gordon

  1. We are well aware that we are sort of a problem to the world, and fortunately, there are some ways to help reduce the blow.
Isn't it annoying when your mom or dad yells at you for like the bazillionth time... "Dim the lights!" "Stop using so much water!!" and(the most annoying of all comments ever made) "Turn off the TV! You're wasting energy!!!!!!!!!!!!"? True, they are HIGHLY ANNOYING REMARKS, but if everyone payed attention, maybe we wouldn't be wasting 10,000 gallons of water, or 230 kilowatt hours(which BTW, is about 25 dollars wasted)!!!!!!We can also take further steps, such as sorting out trash and recyclables, using CFL bulbs, wear layers during winter instead of turning on heaters, turning lights off when you leave a room, et cetera, et cetera, you can OBVIOUSLY SEE THAT THERE IS AN EXTREMELY LONG AND VERY BORING LIST. We may not be able to do it all, but just doing a little, whether or not you see it, DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

    1. I totally AGREE with you Anumitha in per. 7 because you said we need to recycle and we can do everything we can and just some little things can make a difference. Even though it can be boring we should still do it to help the Earth. You can definitely reduce the blow and we would not waste 10,000 gallons of water or 230 kilowatt hours (and we wouldn't waste 25 bucks). Everything you said was totally true and I think everyone should do that.

I strongly support your ideas and comments. Even I find it quite annoying when my parents yell at me to save energy. I don't believe that ANYONE would want to wage 10,000 gallons of water or 230 kilowatt hours. With your great ideas, I think that the Earth would become a much better place to live. :)

I even find it highly annoying that I constantly am being told to shut the lights, waste less energy, and waste less water. Your ideas are very useful. I doubt that anyone would want to be wasting 10,000 gallons of water or 230 kilowatt hours. Though many don't believe that one person not doing it won't affect the Earth, they must know that it does. I will follow your ideas as best as I can and make a difference! :D

You have some really good ideas. I have also experienced the same yelling that you have experienced, such as, "TURN OFF THE LIGHTS!" and "TURN OFF THE T.V.!" No one would want to waste 10,000 gallons of water of 230 kilowatt hours. I also totally agree that by just doing a little, whether we see it or not, it does make a difference! :D

    5. I agree Anumitha because if people recycle, then there would be less trash over filling the Earth. the dumpster can only hold so much. recycling could help us reuse the things we have and decrease the things we throw away. this would help to reduce the amount of trash filling up the Earth. this way there'll be more space for nature.

    7. i also agree because less trash could be less space taken for dumpsters and landfills. less trash could also mean less pollution caused by dump trucks and less pollution in the long stretch can lead to animals not going extinct ( like polar bears).also nobody in the right mind would want to waste money many just dont know they are.

    8. Anumitha, I totally agree with your ideas. People are wasting tons of energy without knowing. I mean, people are wasting there own money!! And I really like how you talked about recycling because it benefits not only the planet, but you too! There are local recycling places that actually pay you for recycling. I strongly support all of your ideas and I hope that people actually try and do the things you said to help the environment be a better place.

    10. I agree with anumitha since if we all just dim the lights and turn off the tv. we will never hear those annoying remarks. but if you think of it we could just use the windows for light and never turn on the lights at all. in addition i believe if we just all save energy we can save 25$ a year. than you can convince your parents for more allowance money we all win.

  2. Most people know that we need to save the Earth, but lots of people ignore that. If we do just some little things to help the Earth we can save it a little bit at a time. Here are some reasons to help save the Earth:
    - Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.
    - Turn off the lights when you are not in a room or leaving a room.
    - Take a shorter shower (Even though it is hard)
    - Recycle some products that have the triangle arrow things
Doing just these things can make you be a better person and help the Earth.

    4. I agree with you Brooke. Tons of people just ignore these warnings... and let me tell you... a couple weeks ago, I would have too. But, now that I am more aware of what could happen if we waste these precious resources I am trying to help save energy. And like Marina said, by saving energy we would be saving money too, money for electricity, gas, etc. I am trying to make the world more suitable so future humans and I hope other people are too.

Doing little things can save our planet. Even though, sometimes it is VERY hard, we have to do the right thing and save our home. We humans are sometimes VERY LAZY when it comes to helping Earth, but we know we have to do the right thing. These few steps can help you get started.
    1. Recycle
    2. Take shorter showers (this one is REALLY hard, but do it)
    3. Turn off the lights when leaving a room.
    4. Not watching TV. Turn it off.
    5. Don't pollute.

These simple and quite easy steps will help us save the Earth. If we all do these, Planet Earth will become truly the best place ever. :)

    1. I agree with both of you, especially with the fact that we are very lazy sometimes. I should also mention that while some of us have everything at our fingertips, others are not so lucky.
Take the dry and poor parts of Africa. There, many people must walk 3 miles to get water to last them through the day! Few people there have air-conditioned homes and also have no electricity in their small, run down homes(Of course there are some people who choose to not use these things and turn to nature to help them). Whatever electricity and water we waste within a week could go to hundreds of kids that need it!!!!

      Delete
    2. I totally agree with you Esha because when we humans are lazy we won't do ANYTHING, especially when it involves helping the Earth. All of your reasons are great, especially the last one, don't pollute. If we even just put that in our minds at all times and even just throw our trash away, it would help A LOT. I hope everyone follows that rule and doesn't just throw their trash on the ground and actually puts it in the trashcan. There are lots of other ways to help the pollution, and that is one of them.

      Delete
    3. i agree because pollution is what causes animals habits to change, and they start to die. this causes a lot of changes in the world. the air could also get pollutes. this could start a whole lot of different diseases and people could get sick. we could prevent things that harm us and the environment.

      Delete
    4. i agree with you esha and i know how hard it is and how people might think that its just one little piece of trash but over the years small problems can accumulate into big problems. i think the time to act is now to prevent what could happen not later trying to fix something that has already happened. it is certainly much easier to prevent even if it is hard to see what you are preventing.

      Delete
    5. yes all of you and essha per 3 your 5 steps are all good
but there are a few other things that would be good
      unplug electronics
use less heating and air and get more weather appropriate cloths
maybe this is not for everyone but you can switch to solar panels

      Delete
    6. Turning off the lights when leaving the room is such a good idea! It's very hard to stick to it though.

      Delete
  4. I agree with both of you, especially with the fact that we can be pretty lazy. I forgot to mention that while some of us are wasting and not watching, others don't have as much.
Take for example, the poor and dry parts of Africa, like Ethiopia, where many don't have easy access to clean water, and because many live in run-down slums, the sanitary conditions are so poor that many often die from easy to treat sicknesses. Many do not have air-conditioned homes or a clean bathroom =(. What we waste could actually be used to help hundreds, even thousands of families in need. Just imagine if WE lived for a week in those conditions! It would be completely MISERABLE!!!
This is not to scare anyone, only so we are aware of what we do. Everything is limited, and we have to do all we can to make sure we still have them.

  5. we need to be careful on how much energy we use, what we do, and not pollute. these are all things that would help maintain our environment. energy, such as electricity is very useful and has become a necessity in everyday, so if you dont need it, you shouldn't waste it. what we do is basically how we treat the environment, and we should treat it with care. the environment provides almost everything for us, so why kill it? we shouldn't pollute, because again that would be killing our environment.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I 100% agree. Without our environment we would be here the metals we need, the food we eat is dying because of us so we should try to save it. Keeping on lights when your not in the room or home is a HUGE waste of electricity and money so like Marina said "if you dont need it dont waste it."

      Delete
    2. I totally agree with you, Marina. I definitely agree if we don't need the electricity then don't waste it. Shut off the lights when you leave your room or any part of your house. I also liked how you said to treat the environment with care because it provides things for us. It does! Don't chop down trees!

  6. With populations climbing every more and more every year will people be able to survive? Over the past hundred years the population has almost doubled. As our species prospers from some of these nonrenewable resources it makes me think what will happen when these run out. If people of this generation energy our relying on gases, oils, and fossil fuels when there is things like solar power that is not polluting our environment are we doing the right thing here? "More people require more resources to survive. That means more potential for polluting the planet's air, soil and water." In this quote that David George Gordon stated in the article above a very good point on this topic showing that the pollution and population growing can lead to no good doing for our home planet. Anyone can do their part in helping the environment with simple things such as unplugging unused electronics, or turning off lights, even if these may be over used but still is small steps into making our carbon footprint smaller.

    1. with the populations the way they are we should also just not chop down trees and plant more right

    2. Planting more trees is a good way to keep our forests healthy.

    3. i agree. We should recycle. We should also plant plants as we cut them. We should try to keep the things we need most in existance

  7. as the human population increases it uses more and more of earths resources like the non-renewable that earth has. in my opinion these non-renewable resources should be used as reserves for times of crisis. and we had done that we could avoid problems like the oil crisis. it is true that most non renewable energy sources are very expensive to capture and dont even provide you with that much energy but we half to think about the future not the present because even if you used money on buying solar panels or anything else you would save money in the future and help the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Populations are increasing greatly. Fact. Humans can survive even with the growing population creeping up to almost 8 billion people. Not a fact.
The population has doubled over the past hundred years, which means more and more people on this earth. The more people on this earth, the more energy we use up. Everyday you most likely either use a car, phone, watch tv, or even take a shower. All of these things take up energy... energy that is not unlimited. What will happen when we eventually run out of non- renewable resources?? If you want to help the environment you can do very simple things such as taking shorter showers, turning off the lights in your room, unpluging electronics that are not being used. All of these things can help make the environment a better place. Are you willing to take the extra minute to look around and say, "Hmmmm, is there anything that I can do to save energy."? If your answer is yes, then we will be making slow, but meaningful progress into making our world a better place.

  9. Saving energy can be the simplest of things like not having the water on while brushing you teeth. Some others are shorter showers, dimmed lights, and walk or bike to school. If even almost near close to everyone started to follow these i think their would be a dramatic change. Some other not only bad for the environment but bad for you are; watching too much T.V., playing too many games, or using too much computer. By following the steps you can change the world

There are many diffrent ways people can help consereve energy and water and stuff like that.If people just simply turn off the lights when ther'e done in the bathroom it would conserve a lot of energy. Also instead of people playing video games or watching tv 24,7 go outside and run around, that would save a lot of energy.ther'e ways of saving water two, instead of wondering about lifes mysteryes for 20 minuts in the shower we can take 5 minuts and that would save a lot of water. We can also just simply not have the water constently runing while you brush your teeth just turn it off.As you can see if we do these things the world would be a better place

    -recycle
-turn off sink when brushing teeth
-don't rely on your heating or air-conditioning

  16. We are all aware of the problems in the world, one of them being pollution. More people need to begin recycling the recyclible and throwing away trash instead of tossing it on the floor. Other problems could be resolved by using less electricity, less water, getting solar pannels, and even biking to school and other places. If these efforts are made, the world will be better.

  17. i think we are all aware of this problem and many people are trying to help, but not enough. my plan is to read more than tv, shorter showers. one big thing is recycling. recycling is very easy, but people recycle different things. like, i recycle cans and bottles, some people recycle plastic. there is a new recycle-able iteam, when you get like beef on a foamy tray, you can now recycle that. we can also cut down on electricy, people act like putting down your phone or iPod/ipad is impossible. like if you said that to some one they would look at you like you are CRAZY.

  19. people today are wasting, when some other people dont have what they have. also, this causes bad things for the environment and Earth. people today have advanced, but have lost touch in whats really important, when in ancient times people weren't struggling with these problems. our problem today is that we aren't looking to our future the way we should be. we are trying to invent useless things that we dont need, when we should stop and focus on Earth and how we should benefit the environment. if the environment gives us everything we need, why dont we do the same back. we sould start conserving energy, and only taking what we need.

  20. Everyone knows that the population is increasing dramatically. People today are wasting things in the world. we need to start limiting water and electricity usage. we need to have people not littering and have people recycle. what if everyone littered? the world would be a mess. the problem is, the people of today arent looking to the future. environmental problems we dont have now could pop up any time in the future. we need to bring our focus back on Earth.
